Mathurin Matharel nam sellóleik i Toulouse og París og sérhæfði sig síðar í eldri tónlist vid Parísarkonservatoríið (CNSM) undir leiðsögn Christophes Coin og Brunos Cocset. Hann lauk þaðan prófi í barokksellóleik med láði vorið 2004.
Síðan hefur hann leikið með fjölda barokkhópa og -hljómsveita, þ.á.m. Le Concert Spirituel undir stjórn Hervé Niquet og Les Folies Françoises undir stjórn Patricks Cohen-Akenine, og tekið þátt i upptökum med þeim. Hann leikur kontinuo m.a. hjá Les Talens Lyriques, (Christophe Rousset), Ricercar Consort, (Philippe Pierlot) og l”Ensemble Pierre Robert, (Frédéric Désenclos). Af smærri hópum mà nefna Les Basses Réunies þar sem hann leikur undir stjórn Brunos Cocset m.a. á verðlaunuðum upptökum verka Boccherinis, Geminianis og Gabriellis.
Sem einleikari leitar Mathurin sífellt fjölbreytni i efnistökum og nýjunga i hljómi. Í því skyni leggur hann fyrir sig fiðlubassann (basse de violon), fimmstrengjasellóið eða pikkoló, sem og rómantískt og “nútíma” selló og getur þannig státað af því að leika tónlist nær fimm alda. Hann kemur fram ásamt semballeikurunum Bertrand Cuiller og Maude Gratton, pianoforteleikaranum Jeanne Bleuse og gitarleikaranum Rémi Jousselme. Hann er ásamt Steinunni Arnbjörgu Stefánsdóttur og Brice Sailly stofnandi indí-rokksveitarinnar SÜSSER TROST.
Mathurin Matharel studied cello in Toulouse and Paris and later specialized in older music at the Paris Conservatory (CNSM) with Christophes Coin and Bruno Coscet. He graduated from there as a baroque cellist in spring 2004.
Since then he has played with numerous baroque ensembles and orchestras such as Le Concert Spirituel with Hervé Niquet and Les Folies Françoises with Patrick Cohen Akenine with whom he has made recordings. He plays continuo with Les Talens Lyriques, (Christophe Rousset),
Ricercar Consort, (Philippe Pierlot) and l”Ensemble Pierre Robert, (Frédéric Désenclos) amongst others. He also performs with smaller ensembles such as Les Basses Réunies with Bruno Coscet for example in prize winning recordings of pieces by Boccherini, Geminiani and Gabrielli.
As a soloist Mathurin always looks for variety in approaches and an innovative sound. That´s why he plays basse de violon, five string cello or piccolo and the romantic “modern” cello and can therefore be proud of being able to perform music of nearly five centuries. He performs with the harpsichord players Bertrand Cuiller and Maude Gratton, piano forte player Jeanne Bleuse and guitarist Rémi Jousselme. He is along with Steinunn Arnbjörg Stefánsdóttir and Brice Sailly founder of the indy-rock ensemble SÜSSER TROST.
